Will Biff and Bump Get Married complete the pentalogy?
Thursday, June 12, 2003
I had in mind the badinage from Beef I about Biff's tribulations in the Flaming Faggot, which has about the same genial vulgarity as the interplay with Doreen Sue and her interest in zippers. Like all great art, the resonances are too great to encompassed by one or two semiological insights; allusions to homoeroticism are but one more set of ideas that provide insight into the human condition that we find in the Beef tetralogy.
In fact, the title Beef has a homoerotic significance -- or as Hardwick would say, layers of homoerotic significance -- which certain authors of monographs about Gravy have failed to acknowledge.
Are Biff and Bump but beef? I believe that is the chief question posed by the whole tetralogy.

The relationship between Biff and Bump is fraught with semiohomoeroticological significance. Obviously their relationship with each other is more important to them than their relationships with women, which apparently last for an average of about two hours apiece (sic). It is highly significant that in Beef 4, although Biff and Bump become dance stars they never dance with women.
And I assume that Inspector Bob's paean to Uncle Sam in Beef 2 is part of the dialogue from Beef that rupert is adducing. While superficially the paean and the song it leads into seem to function as a means of making a joke about Biff and Bump's misapprehension of what inspector Bob is saying, at another level they raise the question of whether Biff and Bump's shock at Inspector Bob's statement is over his infidelity to them.

Gay issues are another taboo that the Anachs have addressed in a distinctively different way; i.e. they poke fun at Gays in exactly the same way as everyone else - a stance that undoubtedly sits very badly with both the Politically Correct crowd and those who use the PC label as a cudgel, e.g. Deck Your Balls and dialogue from Beef.
A Tribute to Sid Herpes' Commemorative Poem in the Style of EJ Thribb
So what's the deal
About gay marriage?
Keith's mum says
It's a sign of the end of civilization
But Keith's mum said that about miniskirts

A poem by Sid Herpes, to commemorate the legalization of gay marriage in Ontario
A place to stand
A place to grow
Grooms are getting whisker burn
In Ontario.
